Nature is vanishing before our eyes. As many as one million plant and animal species are threatened with extinction because of habitat loss, farming, poaching, pollution, invasive species and, increasingly, global warming. Over the past few hundred years, population growth and increased, unsustainable production and consumption patterns have expanded demand for biological resources, which has in turn caused a dramatic loss of biological diversity.

Our home is called the blue planet for a reason. The ocean covers more than 70% of the Earth’s surface. The marine environment is of vital importance for humanity. The ocean generates half of the oxygen we breathe. It contains 97% of the world’s water. It regulates climate and weather patterns. It provides food and sustains livelihoods for over three billion people. It provides the transport route for 90% of global trade. Scientists estimate more than two million species live in the ocean and we have barely identified 10%. But some of the species we have discovered are proving very useful, including in biomedical research.
Human activities have degraded or destroyed the marine ecosystem, jeopardizing the invaluable services it provides. Climate change, marine pollution, overfishing, destruction of marine and coastal habitats, invasive species, oil and gas extraction—the hazards are extensive. These threats not only rob the ocean of its aesthetic and inspirational value—they directly endanger human survival. There can be no sustainable future without a healthy ocean.

Developed in the 1990s, the concept of fair and equitable benefit-sharing has been deployed in an ever-wider variety of international instruments, including those on biodiversity, climate change and human rights. A lack of clarity persists, however, on what fair and equitable benefit-sharing requires and entails, and whether its implementation supports or eventually undermines equity and justice. Το χαμένο παράδειγμα»* δείχνει ότι οι άνθρωποι λανθασμένα αντιλαμβάνονται τον κόσμο σε τρία στρώματα που επικοινωνούν μεταξύ τους: φυσική- χημεία, ζωή- φύση, άνθρωπος- πολιτισμός (συνήθως ονομάζουμε τα στρώματα αυτά ως ανόργανο, οργανικό και κοινωνικό). «Αν η ιστορία της ουτοπίας φωτίζει όντως την ιστορία της ανθρωπότητας, την φωτίζει με τον ακόλουθο τρόπο: οι ουτοπίες μας ήταν αξιολύπητα αδύναμες και ανεπαρκείς. και αν δεν επηρέασαν πρακτικά όσο πρέπει την πορεία των υποθέσεων, ο λόγος είναι, όπως λέει η Βιόλα Πέιτζετ στο βιβλίο της Ευαγγέλια αναρχίας, ότι απλώς δεν ήταν επαρκώς καλές.
